It’s ironic that one of the ugliest storms in history could shine the spotlight on the beauty industry – and the tremendous spirit of support and philanthropy hairdressers and beauty and wellness professionals provide to one another.
On Sunday, December 9 I had the privilege of seeing firsthand how beauty changes lives. Following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy in late October, PBA and several partner organizations quickly joined forces and responded to the needs of so many professionals in our industry whose lives and businesses were impacted by the storm.
In just three short weeks, this small but energetic coalition put together an amazing platform/runway event in New York City to raise funds for Hairdressers Helping Hairdressers. The benefit event was packed with celebrity stylists who generously donated their time and talent for one cause—to support beauty professionals impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
The disaster relief efforts will allow hairstylists and other beauty and wellness professionals to apply for funding to repair or rebuild their business. Funds may be used to replace tools of the trade, provide rent assistance or otherwise assist with recovery efforts.
The stories were heartbreaking as so many people shared tales of losing everything— their salons, homes and all of their tools of the trade. Yet amid the sad outpouring of emotions arose a surge of support that made me so proud to be part of an amazing group of people. That evening, I was truly able to see clearly how beauty changed lives!
